Facebook Lite App, Early this early morning, Facebook published a brand-new, slimmed down variation of their app dubbed Facebook Lite to the Google Play Shop. Targeted at low-end devices in emerging markets where cellular information is a little slower, we need to admit, we were plenty delighted at the prospect of a 2G-friendly variation of the typically bloated Facebook app.
Quickly after installation, our optimism was met cold tough truth-- this app was little bit more than a wrapper for the mobile web view (ie, it's nearly identical to visiting m.facebook.com). Okay, so there are some crucial differences. There's no videos (like, at all) and unlike opening Facebook in your phone's web browser, Facebook Lite will supply you with push notices on your Android device, useful if you're waiting for a crucial message and want to stay up to date with buddies without having to revitalize the web browser.
The trade off? Facebook Lite-- which is marketed as less than 1MB (252KB), however in fact took up 1.16 MB after setup-- demands a reasonable amount of consents from your Android gadget, much like the complete fledged 114MB (after installation) routine version of the app (just without the place data). Oh, did we mention it's slow?
Even on WiFi, the app is slow to load, sluggish to scroll, and slow to change in between News Feed, your messages, and alerts.
