Download Facebook Lite, Early today, Facebook published a brand-new, slendered down variation of their app dubbed Facebook Lite to the Google Play Shop. Aimed at low-end devices in emerging markets where cellular data is a little slower, we need to admit, we were plenty thrilled at the prospect of a 2G-friendly version of the normally puffed up Facebook app.
Quickly after installation, our optimism was consulted with cold difficult truth-- this app was little bit more than a wrapper for the mobile web view (ie, it's almost similar to checking out m.facebook.com). Okay, so there are some key differences. There's no videos (like, at all) and unlike opening Facebook in your phone's web internet browser, Facebook Lite will supply you with push notices on your Android gadget, handy if you're waiting for an essential message and wish to stay up to date with friends without needing to revitalize the internet browser.
The trade off? Facebook Lite-- which is marketed as less than 1MB (252KB), however actually used up 1.16 MB after setup-- requests a fair amount of approvals from your Android device, just like the full fledged 114MB (after setup) routine variation of the app (only without the area data). Oh, did we discuss it's slow?
Even on WiFi, the app is slow to load, slow to scroll, and slow to switch between News Feed, your messages, and alerts. Even with a high-end Snapdragon 801 equipped Android gadget, the "app" straight up feels like molasses. However as we discussed, you do get direct access to your messages without having to set up Facebook Messenger, so there's that.
We think Facebook really had something here and were truly wishing for a quicker, lighter, less function heavy, Facebook app for those of who don't require all the frill of sticker stores and so forth. Unfortunately, Facebook Lite actually just doesn't cut it.
