Facebook Lite Login, Early this morning, Facebook uploaded a brand-new, lost weight variation of their app dubbed Facebook Lite to the Google Play Shop. Targeted at low-end devices in emerging markets where cellular information is a little slower, we need to confess, we were plenty excited at the possibility of a 2G-friendly version of the generally bloated Facebook app.
Right after installation, our optimism was satisfied with cold difficult reality-- this app was bit more than a wrapper for the mobile web view (ie, it's nearly identical to going to m.facebook.com). Okay, so there are some crucial differences. There's no videos (like, at all) and unlike opening Facebook in your phone's web browser, Facebook Lite will provide you with push notifications on your Android gadget, convenient if you're awaiting an important message and want to stay up to date with good friends without having to revitalize the browser.
The trade off? Facebook Lite-- which is promoted as less than 1MB (252KB), however actually took up 1.16 MB after installation-- demands a reasonable quantity of authorizations from your Android gadget, much like the full fledged 114MB (after setup) routine variation of the app (only without the location data). Oh, did we mention it's sluggish?
Even on WiFi, the app is sluggish to load, sluggish to scroll, and slow to switch in between News Feed, your messages, and notices. However as we mentioned, you do get direct access to your messages without needing to set up Facebook Messenger, so there's that.
We believe Facebook truly had something here and were really expecting a quicker, lighter, less function heavy, Facebook app for those of who don't need all the frill of sticker label stores and the like. Sadly, Facebook Lite truly just doesn't cut it.
